Scottsdale Christian
Academy Class Project Email-Truth!
Summary of eRumor:
A fourth-grade class at
Scottsdale Christian Academy in Phoenix, Arizona, wants you to
respond to their email and send it to others so they can see how far
and wide their message goes in a month.
The Truth:
It's true. And they were wise to both have a finish date and a
web page for people to check. Otherwise, these can keep
circulating forever and overwhelm the email address used for
response.
A real example of the story as it has
been circulated:
Hello! We are in the fourth grade at Scottsdale Christian Academy
in
Phoenix, Arizona.
Our teacher is Mrs. Walker.
Our class is going to map aN e-mail project. We are curious to see
"where in the world" our e-mail will travel via the Internet
between the dates of October 12, 2001 and November 12, 2001 (only 1
month.)
This is not a pen pal project, so we will not write you back unless you
request it. We would appreciate your help! If you receive this message,
we ask that you:
1. E-mail us back at: alison.walker@sca-az.org and tell us your
city and state so that we can plot it on our map.
2. Send this letter to everyone you know so that they can send it
on to everyone they know (and so on) to help us reach even more people.
We don't mind receiving repeats, so send it on to everyone!
With this information, we are going to track the number of responses (by
city/state/country) using Excel. Then we'll produce charts and graphs
using Excel.
We will post our results on our class web page at www.quia.com/pages/4walker.html
With your help, we can make this a very exciting learning
experience!
